Release Date: 25th Jul 2007Paranoia, conspiracy theories and bugs...
A good friend of mine, S.P Iyder, introduced me to this title. She assured me that it was ‘disturbing’ and ‘creepy’ (she’s not terribly well educated, poor thing) and complained that she had shuddered so violently, so as to loose all footing (which is remarkable given she has eight of them!) and end up hanging by her dragline (thread to you a me)! Given her reaction, I could not resist – although, I was harbouring suspicions of it turning out to be a molehill.
I am partial to a good jaunt to the brink of apocalyptical destruction, knowing full well that I can recoil and lie contemplatively and quietly in the comforting earthiness around me if it all gets a bit much… which in Last Light, it does.
Scarrow delivers a short, snappy jolt of a start, immediately firing our imagination and driving our natural curiosity to seek out answers and understanding. This has everything, from conspiracy theories to highlighting environmental issues facing the world today – Scarrow made my head zing (and no, that is not a typo). Interestingly for me, my favourite character turned out the be ‘Ash’ – he was just too good at being bad; I found his humanity despite his lifestyle choices to be utterly compelling. You humans are a truly intriguing species!
I won’t ruin the ending for anyone here – but I must congratulate the author on having the fortitude to buck the norm and give up a magnificent ending!
