Release Date: 17th May 2010Some unicorns, some magic and lots of fun...
We loved Babette Cole’s Dr Dog, so we were excited that this fabulously talented children’s author has branched out into writing for older children. From the outset, Cole appears to be keen to stick to the traditionally popular themes for girls: unicorns and princesses – we seem to be getting double the goodies for the price of one... Cole has her work cut out for her in entering the saturated girl’s market, but in her favour is the eye-catching, sparkly cover and her inimitable style.
Fetlocks Hall is a special school that puts ponies first. For young Penny, it is a dream come true when she wins a scholarship to go to Fetlocks, all she has to do in return is help look after the ponies, which she doesn’t mind one bit. But there is more to Fetlocks than meets the eye, and Penny is soon thrust into the magical world of Equitopia. As nice as it sounds, there are dark forces at work and Penny will discover new things about herself and her love for horses.
Reminiscent of the old-school style of writing (think Enid Blyton), Cole sets the pace off at a canter, which steadily moves up into a pleasing trot. With a sprinkling of quirky characters, such as snobbish and cruel “Benji Faulkner-Fitzpain”, or the aptly named headmistress: Potty Smythe – Fetlocks Hall stands a pretty good chance of infiltrating the hearts and minds of pony-loving girls everywhere and we couldn’t be more pleased for her. Next in the series is The Ghostly Blinkers, which has rather fortuitously been published at the same time; meaning that readers won’t have to wait for their next unicorn fix!
