Release Date: 5th Feb 2009All manner of wild beasts, but nothing to really get your teeth into...
I don't like the cover of this children's book - it looks rather out of date and out of touch with the bright colours and fun characters that children expect these days. That said, as the book went on, the illustrations bothered me less than the front cover.
The story is one of a little boy called Jack who finds himself lost in the woods, after being explicitly told by his mother not to venture into them as there are ferocious wild beasts lurking in the woods. When a large, shaggy bear comes up to Jack and asks him what's wrong, Jack immediately tells him he's lost and that the bear should beware as there are supposedly wild beasts that will jump out at you and eat you up, which not surprisingly, frightens the poor bear. They stick together and come across various other animals along the way - all of whom are terrified of the ferocious wild beasts that are supposed to roam around the wood. At last, the motley crew hear strange noises and lights and a terrible roar; only little Jack is left standing there. It's his mum, of course!
If you can get around the fact that there are elephants, lions, crocodiles and pythons in the woods - and the fact that they neither attack Jack nor each other, then you're possibly onto a winner. Unfortunately, though, I just couldn't find enough of a motive to want to purchase this book. It's all just a little bland, certainly, it is a good quality hardback, but it can't quite justify the price tag for me.
