Release Date: 27th May 2008Mac is back... and just as devastating a force as ever.
The Umbra Inheritance is the much awaited (according to us) sequel to the amazing debut, The Lateo Directive by Hunter Mann Purdy - the mysterious and rather unique author. I would love to say that I managed to enjoy it unequivocally, but sadly there was one element that just didn't sit right with me - the whole Princess Diana conspiracy... In fact, the plot could have quite happily trotted along without that sideline. The story just didn't need the controversy and smacks of author insecurities... or maybe he just knows better?
Mac is back and on true form as ever, but when a stake-out cum rescue mission turns sour and Becky gets hit (with a couple of bullets), even Mac's impervious cage gets rattled (good to know he's still human). Still, with the cold detachment of a trained killer, Mac manages to see his job through to the end and then some - and there is a moment when we start to fret - it starts to look like this could be the last we see of Mac and Becky... but never fear, there is more to come!
It is perhaps easy to forget that H.M is mostly writing from experience (but I daresay his take on the "accidental" death of Princess Di is probably fiction at best), but then the fluidity of the gun and hand fights, the depth and clear adulation Mac has for his beloved guns has to come from a serious mountain of knowledge. As ever, The Umbra Inheritance will have trigger-happy gun-toters gravitating towards it with relish and I would add that there will be the odd swooning lady wishing Mac would show up at her door and sweep her off her feet.
Immaculately written; thoroughly entertaining without losing touch with the core gritty realism that made its predecessor such a terrific read - The Umbra Inheritance had us riveted from start to finish. Now THAT is a good book!
