Release Date: 24th Jan 2008A self-published story about a young bird who is afraid of heights and flying!
It can be difficult to get things off the ground as an author, which is why we try to review self-published works as well as mainstream titles. That said, there are times when there is a reason for a lack of publishers snapping at your heels for your latest book... Unfortunately, Pip Pip Hooray is one of them.
To be absolutely fair to the author, the idea behind Pip Pip Hooray is a good one: a young bird finds that he is afraid of heights and even flying, something that should be the most natural thing in the world to his species, and his attempts to overcome such relentless fears in the face of extraordinary adversity are credible. There are some plot turns that are interesting and others that are simply confusing. Either the bird kingdom acts like real birds or they don’t – criss-crossing between scrabbling around for scraps and then suddenly having cups of tea in an abandoned warehouse (where did the kettle and electricity come from?) doesn’t work.
Pip Pip Hooray is not a bad story; in fact, I would be so bold as to suggest that treated properly, it could be a wonderful children’s book. The problem is that the author doesn’t seem to know what age group her audience is; alternating from simple language and dialogue to specific and detailed bird-related facts and the plotline is a little scattered and jarring.
