Release Date: 29th May 2008A debutant with real promise...
Prague 1891 and a young girl, Milena is waiting for her friend Lukas to turn up. Whilst she waits, she wanders over to the run down building that once housed her dead father's puppet show. Preoccupied with her miserable past and perpetual wonder as to the whereabouts of her disappeared mother, Milena fails to notice as a strange man walks up to her. Mysterious and unnerving, Milena is only too glad to get away from the man, yet her thoughts are turned over and over to the fact that he calls himself the 'Puppet Master' and he plans a show in Prague very soon...
Meanwhile, Milena's grandmother decides that it is time to tell her about her true past and the extraordinary abilities that her family possess, but is it too little too late to save Milena from the predatory 'Puppet Master' who has an unnatural fixation on Milena and a rather creepily real looking set of marionettes stowed away in his wagon.
Owen interweaves a new fairytale in amongst older Czech legends with an ease and deference that is breathtaking. Wonderfully eerie and full of an absorbing strangeness that will delight readers; there are the hallmarks of a master storyteller in here. I will be looking forward with great eagerness to read Owen's next offering.
