Release Date: 3rd Jul 2009A wonderfully original twist to the original...
Shimmering with its silver glossiness, The Troll is a lustrously huge book that will immediately appeal to children; especially icky little boys who love nothing more than a grotesquely hairy monster!
Taking on the classic Billy Goats Gruff story, Donaldson adds her own individuality and flair to this age old tale; as far as I recall, pirates never featured in the original – but this contemporary edition does not fare the worse for their inclusion. In fact, goats never make an appearance – instead, we read on as the paths of both the poor, hungry Troll (who is sick of fish and wants a change) and that of the pirates move to converge.
The initial shock of having pirates infiltrate such a well known and well loved children’s story soon passes and it isn’t long before you (and your child) are chuckling away to yourselves at the hapless Troll and the equally useless pirates. If you must look for a moral, perhaps it is that not all treasure comes in the form of gold – sometimes a Troll who can cook is priceless. But what The Troll really is: is a fantastically funny children’s story – and occasionally, that really is enough.
