Release Date: 2nd Oct 2009Fantastical Celtic romance at its best!
A hundred-year-old curse, a disfigured and aloof Chieftain, a spectral/magical army and a lot of enchanted mirrors are the backdrop to Marillier’s latest Celtic-themed romance novel.
Caitrin is running- away from her brutally cruel kinsfolk and away from her past. Her unintentional arrival at Whistling Tor’s strange settlement sets off a chain of events that even she could never have imagined in her wildest dreams. In the first instance, there are the disturbing stories about creatures scuttling about the Tor – such creatures that have ensured that the good settlement folk have rarely, if ever, set foot on it, despite the fact that their Lord and Chieftain resides atop of the hill. But then, he is apparently the cause of the strange apparitions... him and his ancestors. It is pure desperation that forces Caitrin to boldly walk up the hill in search of work and sanctuary against those whom are certain to be following her. It is desperation that bids her stay, even when it becomes clear that the local villagers were not exaggerating their stories. But it is her innate capacity to cherish and love that finds her a place in the hearts of the odd household – and in the heart of her deformed employer: Anluan.
Disney’s Beauty & The Beast this is not; despite the glaringly obvious similarities, Marillier is bold enough to inject a bit of realism into an unlikely love story- there is no transformation of Anulan from deformed cripple to outrageously handsome and whole young man – but who cares?! The point of Beauty & The Beast was always that beauty comes from within and in that respect Anulan does undergo a transformation; but so does Caitrin.
Sentimental, heartrendingly tender and brimming over with ‘Ahhhhhhhh’ moments - If a book could be written in soft-focus: this would be it.
