Delectable fantasy tale masterfully told...

Clodagh is one of the six daughters of Sevenwaters, a land of mystery and relative tranquillity amidst several warring chieftains. Despite the title referring to the Heir of Sevenwaters, the storyline is actually far more biased towards the point of view of Clodagh and of her wrestle with her sense of duty, her belief in the magical beings Sevenwaters has sworn to protect and her burgeoning emotions as she blooms into womanhood.

Clodagh's mother is with child at a later age than would normally be sensible and Sevenwaters is in the throes of anxiety and anticipation as they await the impending birth. As usual, cousin Johnny (current heir to Sevenwaters) is in attendance with some of his warriors - amongst whom are Aiden (a handsome and well placed suitor for Clodagh) and the uncouth Cathal.

When Clodagh's new baby brother is kidnapped and replaced with a changeling that only she can hear and see for what it is, she knows she has to act. Clodagh's father is beyond listening, caught up as he is in fear and suspicions - particularly aimed at the strangely behaved Cathal who has taken this moment to disappear from Sevenwaters. With only her younger seer sister, Sibeal, willing to believe her, Clodagh sets out alone to find the Otherworld and exchange the changeling for her baby brother. But she will not be alone for long - the mysterious Cathal offers to assist her in her quest - but can he be trusted, and what is the secret he holds so tightly to himself?

Marillier is a magnificent storyteller, weaving darkness and light into her tale with a masterful touch. This may be fantasy, but I defy anyone to read this book and not instantly love it. A truly outstanding and exceptional piece of fiction - Heir to Sevenwaters is ultimately a story of love defying all odds and how one might find love in the most unlikely of places.
