Release Date: 7th Jul 2008An unprepared Grandma gets a night to remember when her grandson comes to stay
As a winner of the Red House Children’s Book Award for younger children, I had high expectations but not necessarily high hopes of this book. It is a sad truth that sometimes getting an award isn’t necessary synonymous with a book being any good (I said it was sad, right?).
What! is however, a truly wonderful children’s book. The story plays out as a little boy, Patrick (a wonderfully quirky and unusual name these days – especially for children’s literature), goes for an overnight stay with his grandma. But when it is time for bed, drama unfolds as Patrick discovers new reasons as to why he just simply cannot go to bed – from not having a bed at all (surprising but true), to needing a teddy bear to snuggle up with.
As for the grandma, not only does she have the patience of a saint, but the DIY skills of a trained carpenter, haberdashery house or soft toy manufacturer! Her energy is boundless and her proficiency is never in any doubt, which is just a wonderful message to send our youngsters about the older generation.
What! benefits from repetition, predicable phrases and some distinctive imagery. For imagination alone this gets a thumbs up. So finally – an award well won. This is a book that your child will laugh out loud to and want you to read again, and again and again...
Absolutely worth every penny.
