Release Date: 7th May 2009A magic box and an imaginative little girl...
Box of Tricks is a tale of young girl who receives a very special and magical present for her birthday. What looks like an ordinary cardboard box to you and me, is in fact, an incredibly powerful and magical box that turns Eva into a grand magician. With her newfound abilities, Eva wastes no time at all in conjuring up all those things she has ever wanted, which astonishingly seems to include a rather large polar bear!
There is no question that Box of Tricks is a beautifully illustrated children’s book, indeed, Cleminson’s illustrations are whimsical, elegant and charming. There is perhaps a little too much red for my personal tastes, but this is trivial niggle. The story is light-hearted; trilling and skipping along quite pleasantly. It introduces the concept of imagination and indicates how powerful – or magical – it can be. It was mildly disappointing that there was so little text, as on appearance this seemed to be a story aimed at 5+, but the overall quality of the illustrations outweigh these minor shortfalls. As an illustrator, Cleminson has a distinctive and wonderful talent.
