Release Date: 7th Feb 2008The Black Pearl is the second in the Mermaid Curse series, which features a young girl called Lizzie whose past was shrouded in mystery until she returned to the place where she was found as a baby (Cornwall) and the discovery that not only does she have a brother called Kes, but her mother is a mermaid!
Still very much in the dark, Lizzie doesn’t realise that she is the keeper of a fabulously powerful and magical item – the Silver Pearl... but she does know that it is important and to be kept away from the sea. When Kes and his mother have to go into hiding from the mermaid Queen, Lizzie is left struggling to understand what could have happened to them, until, suddenly, she has to face the reality that her father (missing for eleven years) is back. But it is when Kes and his mother risk everything to finally see him again that things take a turn for the worse...
On the downside, I suspect that the series could have been chopped up a little too finely. To be more succinct; they are, individually, too short. It would have perhaps been more rewarding for the reader for two of these books to be merged into one, bigger title. As it is, they are more like mini episodes.
Imaginative and full of theatrical suspense – The Black Pearl continues Lizzie’s personal journey of self discovery as a half mermaid. Cooper sets the tone and range of vocabulary at the right level and although this isn’t a challenging read, it is enjoyable.
