Sophie has been Awakened, but will Josh also make that first step?

The second instalment of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, The Magician continues the journey of the twins, Sophie and Josh Newman, as they follow the Alchemyst, Flamel and sidekick, Scathach deeper into a world of mystery, myth and dangerous creatures.

The group now find themselves in Paris after using the Leygate in order to escape Dr Dee. But if they thought they would be safe thousands of miles away from the English Magician, they are sorely mistaken. Dee has a counterpart based in Paris; none other than Machiavelli. Together, they are determined to either capture Flamel or kill them all.

We are introduced to some new characters – namely, le Compte de Saint-Germaine (who happens to not only be an immortal, but a regular present-day rock star) and his wife, Joan of Arc. Both are immediately drawn into the tumultuous events that surround the Flamels and the twins; both are equally determined to help in whatever way they can. But when the Disirs show up literally at Saint-Germaine’s door with their impressive and terrifying Nidhogg creature, Josh is separated and ends up in the hands of Dee and Machiavelli. Dee promises to Awaken Josh – but can he be trusted?

Drawing on an unparalleled concoction of imagination, mythology and historical events, Scott recaptures the magic and wonder of his first outing (The Alchemyst).

It is rare that sequels are equal to their predecessors – but I would not hesitate to offer that in my opinion, The Magician, goes one better! Scott truly is a master at work, and this series of work is a masterpiece in children’s fiction. Absolutely unmissable – even for you grown-ups!
