The fifth in the Ancient Chronicles Series

Torak has had his status as 'outcast' reversed by his foster father, and he is enjoying the simplicity of life with the Seal Clan. In a cruel twist of fate that seems to persevere after Torak; his best friend, Bale, is murdered and Torak vows to avenge his death. So begins a journey fraught with traps, warring Forest Clans and a seriously dangerous Oak Mage (Thiazzi).

In Oathbreaker we see a decline in the relationship between Torak and Wolf, a growing awareness between Torak and Renn and the maddening effect of grief, guilt and self-doubt. At only 15, Torak is still comparatively young, despite the traumas he has had to endure and as his thirst for vengeance takes a firm grip on his souls it is not certain whether Torak will have the wit to out-manoevre Thiazzi. Indeed, the Oak Mage seems fuelled with power and influence over the people of the Dark Forest and it will take every bit of Torak's strength and wit to overcome the obstacles in his way.

A very dark, occasionally grim story, Paver is able to brilliantly produce an old world, one where mankind is still dependent on mother nature; where the world still looks, smells and tastes new. Oathbreaker is the story of how we are all beholden to relationships, whether they are of friendship, mutual belief, romantic inclinations or the bond of family. It is about being hot-headed and impetuous and having to learn that sometimes one can become so absorbed in "doing the right thing", that we leave everyone else behind. A wonderful fifth book in this much admired series.
