Release Date: 3rd Apr 2008Interactive fun in an indivudal and quirky way from one of the best Children's authors in the UK!
Nick Sharratt is back and I was looking forward to seeing the latest offering from the children’s book guru... but then, I have been accused of being biased in the past... I simply cannot help myself – Sharratt brings out my inner worm! The Dinosaur is so Big works on the premise that children really respond to interactive tools (perhaps why computer games appear to be so addictive), and like some of his previous titles, this one is also interactive.
Clearly aimed for the age group 3-5’s, there isn’t exactly much going on; dinosaurs hold, jump, carry and even eat objects – all of which can be chosen by the reader by way of eight giant magnets. The fun comes from being able to swap the objects around at whim and allows children to come up with their own silly ideas – from a dinosaur playing football with a sofa to balancing a ship in its tail. On the down side (and amazingly there is one), this can get boring very quickly and because there is a distinct lack of storyline, there is nothing to keep the kids coming back for more, so I suspect it may be a bit of a one-hit wonder.
Not surprisingly, it works on an educational level as there is lots of repetition and just enough words to capture their imagination without overwhelming this age group. So from a parent’s perspective, this is another win as it will absolutely get their attention and the interactivity will definitely make this fun.
Overall, I guess I’m undecided on this one. The price is a bit hefty for a potential one-hit wonder, but it does benefit from fulfilling the criteria for the kind of book likely to help your children learn to read... I’m torn... Alright, alright – it may be a shameless cashing-in exercise, but I still love it!
