Release Date: 5th Feb 2009Compelling teenage Vamp drama...
The second in this compulsive new Vampire series written by mother and daughter team; Betrayed takes up the reins where Marked left off.
Zoey Redbird (as she is now known) has been at the House of Night for a couple of months now. In that extremely short time, she has managed to forge lasting friendships with fellow fledglings Stevie Rae, Damien and the “Twins”; overthrow the unscrupulous “hag” Aphrodite as leader of the Dark Daughters and discover that despite all her internal wishes otherwise – she is no ordinary fledgling. Zoey has an affinity with the five elements: air, fire, water, earth and spirit. As the new High Priestess in training and leader of the Dark Daughters, Zoey is determined to ensure that first impressions are good ones and that she actually makes a difference. Unfortunately for Zoey, events are to conspire against her in the cruellest way. Everyone who is marked knows that they will either complete the Change into a fully grown Vampyre or they will die (in a distinctly gruesome and painful manner); already two fledglings have died at the House of Night. Their deaths and subsequent sightings by Zoey have left her feeling that something isn’t quite right – and when Stevie Rae starts looking off-colour – it doesn’t look good. If that isn’t enough; Zoey’s gut instinct is persisting in telling her that the High Priestess, Neferet, isn’t all sweetness and light and then human teenagers start going missing...
The intertwining of Native American beliefs with a fresh look at what constitutes a Vampyre works well. We all wish we had a Grandma as cool as Zoey’s; although something had to make up for the hideous “rentals” (parents)! The “Twins” all-American exuberance does get a little irksome at times, as does the persistent reference to Damien’s gayness (we got it the first time – and we totally get that the authors have no homophobic issues), but there really is very little to dampen the enthusiasm and uncontrollable pull of this exceptional Vamp series.
A brilliant follow-on to the first instalment; Betrayed doesn’t disappoint. If you found yourself desperate to find out all the answers to questions in book one – you won’t find them all here though – the authors are crafty women after-all, so there is lots more to come.
