Release Date: 4th Jun 2009Neferet's transition to the 'dark side' is out - but is Zoey the only one who can see it?
In Untamed, things were left in a state of chaos. Now that Kalona has returned, it seems that together with Neferet, he has not only taken over the House of Night but has got his ‘Raven Mockers’ terrifying the local Tulsa populace. Zoey, the nerd herd, Erik, Aphrodite and the red fledglings managed to escape the school grounds, but now they are in desperate need of a plan to not only save themselves, but everyone else as well.
Hunted, despite the foreboding title, offers less action and more teenage angst as Zoey struggles with her feelings for the newly returned and newly Changed, Erik; the complication of new undead boy, Stark and an unavoidable re-Imprint with human ex-boyfriend, Heath. Indeed, the plot takes a back seat to the newly enlarged group’s interpersonal relationships; suspicions, jealousies, rivalries and the interesting development of Aphrodite’s Imprint with Stevie Rae doesn’t equal a satisfactory progression of the actual story. Our impatience to get the nitty-gritty is really a compliment to the authors though, it being a symptom of our growing infatuation with the House of Night series; and whilst the book may take its sweet time in getting around to the inevitable skirmish, we appreciate it all the more because we were made to wait. And, it is only at the end that we begin to understand the purpose of what had previously been perceived as trivial subtext.
Written with an occasionally uncomfortable realism as we delve into the mysterious psyches of the adolescent mind, Hunted is more than your average supernatural teenage thriller: with more than a little wit and rueful self-deprecation, we are made to go through the arduous journey of being more than ‘normal’. Mother and daughter team are clearly a dream team; weaving their amalgamated feminine magic to make this series an absolute gem.
