Naughty and nice - one for fans of Karen Chance...

The first instalment of an exciting and slightly intoxicating new Vampire series written by mother and daughter team; Marked seems intent on setting itself apart from the usual teenage/vampire angst- something is certainly achieves in spades, but perhaps not for the reasons you might think.

Zoey Montgomery is sixteen and undergoing the excruciatingly painful process of extricating herself from an unhealthy attachment to football jock, Heath. The last thing she needs is more complications to her already stiflingly awkward life. Not only is her ex a moron, but her stepdad is a religious hypocrite who has apparently transformed her mother’s personality in the three years he has been a part of their lives. Now, her life has been flipped into an alternate universe – a Vampyre Tracker has marked her out for the Change - she will either successfully become a blood-sucking Vampyre or she will die in the process. No major stress, then? As Zoey struggles to come to terms with her new life; it becomes increasingly obvious that she has joined the ranks at the House of Night at a time of unprecedented unrest.

Down-to-earth, with an undeniably American slant, Marked attempts to redefine what it is to be a Vampyre and to perhaps garner some sympathy for those unfortunates who are given the blessing or curse of being one. Packed with ritual, unnatural affinities or abilities and an irritatingly irresistible plotline; Marked is strangely enchanting and thrilling. It does, however, come with a stark warning: not suitable for younger readers – and on reading this is hardly surprising. Those with particularly sensitivity to anything sexual will positively gawp, slack-jawed at the crudity of some of the language used. This is not a series aimed at the younger, inexperienced teenager. You have been thus warned twice-fold. That said, it is like the guilty stash of romance novels you keep hidden under your bed – you know you shouldn’t enjoy them, but you just can’t help yourself!
