Be prepared to get addicted...

Tempted seems determined to throw out every perception we thought we had about the main players; Erik shows he’s far from perfect and gets the boot from Zoey, Aphrodite morphs into a deeply sensitive and caring young woman, Stevie Rae displays a rare act of humanity that could have profound repercussions and Zoey – well, Zoey pretty much remains in a semi-permanent state of confused emotions.

The battle may have been one by the good guys, but the war is far from over. Kalona and Neferet are still out there somewhere, plotting away to capture power over all Vamps and humans, and Kalona is still messing with Zoey’s head. The Cherokee legend continues to play a pivotal part of the plot, as Zoey finally comes to terms with her being the reincarnation of A-ya (the clay form created to both love and trap Kalona by the Cherokee wise women), but still struggles with the jumble of internal feelings that leaves her with. After a very brief return to the House of Night, Zoey and gang realise that even with Kalona gone, his influence remains and they are spurred into action. We leave the characters’ and the authors’ comfort zone with a change of scenery – cue a private House of Night jet (yes, really) and a meeting with the High Council in Italy.

It’s good to get out of Tulsa, but the foray into European waters isn’t written with quite the same dramatic flourish – everything being a little flat and two-dimensional. The focus remains on the conflict between Kalona and Zoey, which is understandable if not a little frustrating. Of far more interest is the thrusting of Stevie Rae into the limelight. Her ascension to High Priestess status of the Red fledglings is abrupt and seemingly unofficial, but with it comes a new angle from the authors – as it now seems that there are two strands of destiny at work: Zoey and Stevie Rae.

Things are very much left on a huge cliff-hanger, much to our chagrin, but at least we can draw some comfort from the promise of another instalment (hopefully coming soon!). The series may be like a gigantic sandwich stuffed with American cheese, baloney and a scrumptiously bewildering mystery sauce – but as the authors would say: “We heart House of Night!”.
