Release Date: 6th Sep 2010Run-of-the-mill compilation of worn-out classic children's stories...
Every now and then, a publisher will produce a children’s compilation of nursery rhymes and/or short stories, but does this latest offering from Bloomsbury offer anything new for our children’s bookshelf?
The Bloomsbury Nursery Treasure is a collection of 10 classic nursery tales, featuring all the usual suspects: Little Red Riding Hood, Henry Penny, The Three Little Pigs, Rumplestiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk, etc, etc... You get the general idea. The only story that was less familiar is: “One Eye, Two Eye and Three Eye”, a rather laborious retake on the Cinderella story, with two ugly sisters, the downtrodden, pretty sister and a handsome prince. The stories themselves remain true to tradition with little or no deviation. No change in content then. The illustrations are traditional is style and palette (think soft shapes, whimsical characterisation and delicate pastel shades); so nothing new there either.
This hardback edition seems pricey at almost £13, and if it’s a collection of bedtime stories you’re after, there are better one’s out there – even by Bloomsbury. Personally, I’d save myself a bundle and get a good quality second-hand compilation; you’re children will grow bored of these ‘samey’ stories around the same time you do.
