Release Date: 4th Oct 2010Inventive, clever and too, too funny...
Being a physical person, my reaction to this title was impulsive, immediate and full of want. All rounded corners, extra thick cover and gorgeously contrasting colour scheme – this book had me at the outset. For any doubter that a book’s cover can make or break its success: this nails it. It absolutely can.
Inside was not at all as expected but did not fail to deliver on the promise of its covering. It is essentially just a list... but what a list! If you have ever harboured a hankering after being a hero (or for that matter, an evil genius), this checklist covers everything you will need. From getting your own “Villainous Chair” with all the necessary accoutrements to your evil genius workspace (think: indoor pool accompanied by crocodiles, huge red rocket launch button and furry critter to stroke menacingly) to tick off, to getting X-Ray vision – 101 Things to Do to become a Superhero has every conceivable hero-making device or skill you will need.
If the idea of having ‘just a list’ isn’t enough for you, then you’ll want to complete the challenges associated with each ‘thing’. Just like the list, the challenges range from physical to mental or simply focuses on making you think about your own strengths.
Great for building confidence, keeping the children entertained (although doing so in silence is not guaranteed), as well as providing structured interaction between parent and child. We love the witty, personable style, the handy cross-referencing of ‘things’ to do at the same time and the entire interactive concept of the book. 101 Things to Do to become a Superhero is an absolute gem. If we have one complaint, it is that we wish we’d know about it for the summer holidays!
