Pacy and with a hefty punch - an excellent crime novel worth reading

Shooting from the hip; this novel has some sharp twists that will leave you reeling in a most pleasant manner - after all - not many crime novels can so casually turn things on their head.

Lena Gamble is a cop and not surprisingly, she gets herself put on a seemingly open and shut murder case, where the husband does the deed, albeit it in a rather bloody and deranged way. The only trouble is that whilst all the evidence appears to point at the recently bereaved spouse, Lena just can't shake off the loose ends that don't tie him in as neatly as she would like. And when the case against him starts to unravel - so too does a previous open and shut case, even though the husband confessed and is already serving time. Only Lena can see the pattern and realises that there is one sick puppy out there killing people. But if she thought that the prospect of finding the killer dubbed 'Romeo' was bad enough - Lena couldn't have guessed that in her own department, a game of subterfuge and deceit is going on to cover up murder.

I usually like my serial killers to remain annonymous - a shadowy figure that only emerges at the end of the game... but in City of Fire, we are introduced to the killer almost immediately, although perhaps we don't realise it as first. There was a crude attempt at a plot twist regarding the killer's character, which fell a little flat and was unnecessary in my opinion, but otherwise an engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable read. Fans of this genre will not be disappointed.
